The Hungry Shark series of games has been chomping its way through app stores for several years now, and even though Hungry Shark World recently released, many gamers are still hung up on the previous entry–Hungry Shark Evolution and are looking for a great hack, secret, or tip.
Appamatix is here with a whole bunch of secrets, tips, and tricks (no real hacks, sorry friends) that will help you to whip through this game and unlock all of its features in no time at all. Hungry Shark Evolution isn’t a multiplayer game, so the only thing standing in your way is your own skill and some necessary features that are tough to get early in the game. Ready to knuckle down and swim the seas? Then keep reading!
It’s not any great surprise that sharks make for great game fodder, and the first title in the series–simply titled Hungry Shark–proved that once again. It’s the same rule that has kept sharks popular in movie theaters for years on end–they’re mysterious, they’re deadly, and because they’re the masters of an environment that’s not our own, they’re terrifying!
With Hungry Shark Evolution, we’re given much more cartoonish versions of the oceans top predators, but that doesn’t keep the game from being just as fun. Contrary to that, it’s actually more fun than any Hungry Shark game before it, and there’s more to do than ever before. There are more sharks to unlock, more areas to swim in, and more items to buy for your cadre of fish.
If the Hungry Shark series is guilty of one thing, it’s of taking quite a while to change the basic principles that made the first game so successful, while still remaining true to its primary gameplay style. You’re still swimming the seas. You’re still growing. You’re still eating as much as possible in order to keep swimming. In Hungry Shark Evolution, however, the game has changed to make you want to play the numerous sharks that have been added to the game. Missions are broken up based on each particular shark, and you’ll now occasionally face bosses. Cool, right?
“Evolution” remains a core principle of this particular game, and it’s the goal that you’ll be constantly working towards as you rack up higher scores, collect more coins and gems, and learn how to survive longer with each play session. You can track all of your unlocked sharks’ evolution through the game’s menus, which provides an exceptionally improved amount of game to play through. For a free-to-play title, you’re not going to run out of new things to do in Hungry Shark Evolution for quite a while.
In all that time that you’re bound to spend playing, it’s going to be helpful to keep in mind some basic, simple tips that can be used for the entirety of your experience. The following tricks, secrets, and tips are meant to be used by newbies and Hungry Shark veterans alike, so next time you boot up the app for a quick swim, keep them in mind!
Location, Location, Location!
If this isn’t your first Hungry Shark game, then this might be a moot point. It is, however, exceptionally important that you learn to check your map quickly and often while you’re playing Hungry Shark Evolution. Especially as your shark begins to require more food to keep on swimming, you’ll want to know how to navigate a particular area (or how to get to a spot you’ve never been, before.)
It can be easy to get caught up in all that eating and swimming, but knowing where you are can keep you going and help you to find mission objectives (more on this later) that much better! Turn it into a strong Hungry Shark habit.
Manage Your Resources
When monetization is what controls the profit of a game, it always tends to show up in the same way–progress is gated by collecting a certain currency, which just so happens to be available for purchase with your hard-earned money from an in-app cash shop. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but for those of us without a lot of disposable income, it means we need to work harder to keep track of the resources that become available just through playing the game.
Coins and gems are where it’s at in Hungry Shark Evolution, and they control the pace at which you unlock sharks, evolve them, and purchase items for them (including little shark companions, which we’ll talk about momentarily!)
Rather than dumping all of your resources into a particular shark or particular evolution path, it’s instead smarter to spread out your coins and gems evenly. Your progress through the game (and enjoyment you have while playing it) only stand to benefit!
When starting up Hungry Shark Evolution, you’ll frequently be tempted into watching trailers for other games at the promise of free gems.
This isn’t a scam. Go for it! It’s a few minutes out of your day, and gems are a fairly rare commodity as it is. Just don’t become reliant on the income, because they’re not always going to be available to you. Similarly, you’ll receive bonus gems for “liking” the Hungry Shark Evolution page on Facebook, so as long as you don’t mind that particular bit of information showing up on your news feed, do that as well!
Track Your Gold Rush
Gold rushes are the best way to grab a huge amount of points, so when you finally manage to get one (the requirement changes per type of shark), go wild! If there’s ever a time to play aggressively, explore, and use boosts, it’s while you’re binging on tons of points from a gold rush.
The tip behind all of this, though, is to be cautious while you’re going nuts. I know, right? It sounds contradictory, but I can’t even count the number of times that I’ve been cruising along, only having eyes for things that my shark can eat, and I run smack into something that whittles down my life bar in seconds.
It’s a bummer, and it’s totally preventable by keeping your eyes open while you’re on a gold rush.
Many free-to-play app store games try to keep you coming back by offering rewards for continued play. Of course, they don’t want you to endlessly reap rewards all day long (you’ll have to pay for monetized items in app’s cash shop, for that), but there will always be a set of daily challenge missions for you to undertake that can result in gems and coins.
As long as you know how to complete them efficiently, they’re never going to take a ton of time. On top of that, the bonus gets larger each sequential day that you complete them, starting with 100 coins and building up to 400, before resetting.
Growth Points Matter
There aren’t many currencies to keep track of in Hungry Shark Evolution, but in addition to gems and coins you also have growth points. These are the gate by which you’ll gain access to other sharks in the game, and the reason that you want to stay alive for as long as possible in each and every play session.
You start the game as an itty-bitty Reef Shark, and while you’re nonetheless capable of eating all kinds of things, the deeper ocean will quickly show you that a bigger shark is going to be necessary to tackle bigger things. After earning 2000 growth points, you’ll then be allowed to spend 1500 coins to unlock the Mako Shark. The trend climbs and climbs until you final reach the pinnacle of shark evolution with the Megalodon.
What’s the easiest way to make the dangerous seas feel a little bit safe? Purchase a baby shark to roam around with you, of course! Like the primary shark species that you’ll be able to play as in the game, baby sharks come in all kinds of different varieties that become more deadly at the same time that they become more costly.
Purchase one of these little buggers, though, and you’ll quickly find yourself glad to have that extra set of chompers swimming along as your wingman.
Big Trouble at the Bottom of the Ocean
I never expected “boss fights” to be as incredibly fun as they are in Hungry Shark Evolution, but the developers nevertheless managed to pull it off in the form of Giant Enemy Crabs. These difficult creates hang out at the bottom of the ocean and are actually fairly difficult to tackle, but you can do it with any sized shark. The tradeoff is that you’ll have a much, much easier time with a stronger shark. If you try to tackle it before getting a bigger fish, there’s a good chance that you’re going to get pincered to death in a single swipe. Yowza.
Once you’re feeling brave and strong, take on one of the game’s crab bosses for suitable rewards!
Super Missions are Super
You won’t get access to “Super Missions” until you’ve finished all of the regular missions for a given shark, but once you have them, they’re a new set of challenges to take on that will give you further rewards, thereby allowing you another way to accumulate resources.
Depending on the size of shark that you’re taking on the Super Missions for, you might find out that you’ve already accomplished some of the missions’ goals already. Tough luck, because you’ll have to do them again, under the banner of a Super Mission! The rewards, however, make up for any monotony.
Avoid “Hacks” and “Cheats”
Under normal circumstances, I might not include this on a list of “secrets and tips,” but the promises of untold coins and gems offered from seemingly every corner of the internet has made it necessary. Therefore, I’ll clue you in just once: don’t do it!
Far too often, I’ve seen people fall victim to outright scams, and occasionally infect their devices with malware and other nonsense purely because they’re looking for a way to “cheat” at an app store game. Even though there’s a slim chance that a cheat for an online game might actually work, it’s always going to be more likely to backfire on you. Online games are consistently updated and if you’re found to be cheating, the moderators and developers responsible for maintaining that game can (and will) ban you. Welcome to the world of online gaming! Hacks and cheats have mostly been left behind in the era of consoles without internet connections.
And there you have it! A set of “best practices” for your Hungry Shark Evolution gameplay that you can use from start to finish, Reef Shark to Megalodon. You won’t find any hacks, but these 10 secrets and tips never cease being useful, so keep them in mind while you’re playing and as always, don’t hesitate to talk up your own favorite techniques and secrets in the comments below!
